European Court Rules Against Diet Pill Manufacturers – (05-21-01)

European Court Rules Against Diet Pill Manufacturers

Europe has always been way ahead of the US in regards to health and wellness, and this is yet another example. The list of drugs on the banned list is quite extensive; but interestingly still does not contain some of the drugs manufactured by the bigger pharmaceutical giants…

(article) The European Court has rejected appeals by diet pill manufacturers to be allowed to continue selling numerous anorectic agents that have been withdrawn from the market because of the risk of serious cardiac side effects. On March 9, 2000, the European Commission ordered national marketing authorisation withdrawals of all drugs containing amfepramone, phentermine, clobenzorex, fenbutrazate, fenproporex, mazindol, mefenorex, norpseudoephedrine, phenmetrazine, phendimetrazine and propylhexedrine. The action followed several earlier alerts by the Commission and national authorities about the potential dangers of anorectic agents, many of which had already been taken off the market by manufacturers. However, many companies, especially small firms dependent on these drugs for their financial survival, went to the European Court in Luxembourg to challenge the Commission’s decision. The companies successfully obtained a stay of execution during 2000 but the President of the Court has now annulled this, saying that the lower court should not have substituted its own opinions for those of the European Commission’s scientific advisory committee. In a judgement dated April 11, President Rodriguez Iglesias added that allowing the drugs to stay on the market could have presented a serious risk to the health of consumers. He recalled that the protection of public health is more important than company economic considerations.

Pharmaceutical Branding of Resident Physicians – (09-06-01)

Pharmaceutical Branding of Resident Physicians

Maybe I’m just jealous that the nutriceutical company reps do not have $100K in their expense accounts (I am very appreciative of the occasional issue of Clinical Pearls…), but this concept bothers me. Despite everyone denying that it has an effect, studies show that it does. And drug companies would not do it if it didn’t work, plain and simple. This kind of relationship removes much of the objectiveness of the doctor. Pharmaceuticals should be the LAST place physicians get their information from, and yet, quite frequently for many busy doctors, it is the only place.

Drug company fined for excessive hospitality – (03-01-01)

Drug company fined for excessive hospitality

Do I really need to comment on this?? All decisions for patient care should be made with one question in mind: Will this benefit my patient? This decision should be unadultered with memories of extravagant trips, daily lunches at the office, free continuing education seminars and ads seen everywhere imaginable. Pharmaceutical marketing to the public SHOULD NOT have an impact on prescribing habits. Every doctor should review the evidence from an independent and unbiased source to determine its safety and effectiveness. Maybe you could actually consider the lack of gigantic advertising budgets for nutriceutical companies a good thing–the physician then relies on medical research and personal experience to make recommendations to their patients.

PRESCRIPTION GIVEN INFLUENCED ONLY BY MEDICAL NECESSITY – (05-09-02)

November 21, 2012 by James Bogash

Drug companies maintain “astounding” profits

Is anyone surprised about this title? Is anyone surprised that the healthcare system is so overburdened from pharmaceutical payments? The things that still amazes me is that direct to consumer advertising is effective. It absolutely, positively should not be. Prescriptions given to a patient should be influenced by nothing except medical necessity for the patient. So much for a perfect world…

USE OF HERBAL MEDICINES SAFER THAN PHARMACEUTICAL COUNTERPARTS – (11-03-03)

November 15, 2012 by James Bogash

Herbal medicines put into context

Finally!! An editorial in a major medical journal that brings to light that natural medicine is held to a much higher standard, and that the safety profiles of all natural products put together is incredibly low compared to their pharmaceutical counterparts.

TREATMENT OF ASTRAZENECA – (11-03-03)

The statin wars: why AstraZeneca must retreat

If you would like a small peek into the complex and powerful realm of pharmaceutical manufacturing and marketing, this editorial should give you a taste. We begin to see how data is manipulated around not for the patient’s benefit, but rather for the bottom line of the shareholders.
