Celiac Disease Overlooked as Cause of Iron-Deficiency Anemia

Celiac disease (gluten insensitivity; an allergy to certain proteins in wheat, barley and rye) does occur at a surprisingly high percentage in our population (one in 100 to 300, depending upon whom you ask…), and anemia is only a small portion of the potential deleterious effects; Alzheimers, autoimmune diseases, dental caries and osteoporosis are but a few others on the list. Remember that food allergies, no matter the type, can upregulate the immune system and lead to excessive inflammation. One chaep, easy way to begin to cut down on some of your food allergies is to add betaine HCL (stomach acid) to your meals–the better we break down proteins to amino acids, the less likely those proteins are to invoke an allergic response.

Br J Haematol 2000;111:898-901 Especially in menstruating women, celiac disease appears to be underinvestigated as a potential cause of iron-deficiency anemia. Dr. D. J. Unsworth of Southmead Hospital in Bristol, UK, and colleagues identified 483 blood samples from prospective blood donors who met study criteria for anemia (hemoglobin <11 g/dL for women, <13.5 g/dL for men in order to recruit enough men). Of the donors, 28 women (26 premenopausal) and 4 men tested positive for IgA anti-endomysial antibodies and were asked to undergo further followup for celiac disease. Of the 25 subjects who underwent endoscopic small intestinal biopsy, 22 “had histological changes compatible with celiac disease,” the researchers write. Twenty-one of these were women, and Dr. Unsworth’s team notes that none of the women had been previously investigated for the possibility of celiac disease. The research team reports that their screening of anemic adults for celiac disease resulted in a detection rate of over 6%, compared with 0% detection of celiac disease using EDTA blood samples from 250 nonanemic blood donors. “Celiac disease serology is easy, cheap and reliable,” the authors write. “We recommend that all cases of anemia of uncertain cause, including all women with anemia ascribed to menstrual blood loss or poor diet, be checked for celiac disease-associated autoantibodies.”

Heart Attack Statistics: Dental Invader Found in Heart Plaques

Heart attack statistics stem from multiple factors; the famous one cause : one cure model that dominates medicine just doesn’t fit here.

It would be wonderful, though, if this were true.  That means that treating everyone with a statin to lower his or her cholesterol would actually work.  Or lowering everyone’s high blood pressure with a beta blocker, ACE-inhibitor or calcium channel blocker would yield amazing outcomes.  Or the identification of a single genetic factor that caused heart disease would yield the biggest blockbuster drug ever.

Alas, heart disease is multifactorial and requires a comprehensive lifestyle approach to avoid or manage it (you can read my recommendations by downloading my free ebook here).

But this does not mean that there are not certain factors that play major roles in the development of sickened blood vessels that ultimately lead to a heart disease or fatal myocardial infarction.

And it’s not cholesterol.

Chronic inflammation is arguably one of the key factors that contribute to heart disease.  Chronic inflammation comes from many sources, including poor dietary choices, stress and sedentary lifestyles.  Chronic infections are on the list.

Key among these is the oral cavity and the gut.  Which brings us to this particular study.

Researchers looked for the presence of bacteria within the plaques (thrombi) from patients who suffered a heart attack and compared the levels of certain bacteria to those found floating around in the bloodstream.  Here’s what they found:

  1. The total amount of bacterial DNA in the thrombi was 16 times higher than in the blood.
  2. Viridans streptococci (a bacteria typically associated with dental infections), was found in 78.2% of thrombi.
  3. Bacteria associated with periodontal disease were found in 34.7% of the plaques.
  4. Bacteria-like structures were detected by in a subgroup of 30 patients with a heart attack that were examined by a specialized CAT scan, those with a periapical abscesses were 13.2 TIMES more likely to have viridans streptococci DNA found in his or her plaque (Tweet this).

The bottom line is that, although our country’s disturbing heart attack statistics are the result of many different things going wrong in the body, it is very clear that good oral health needs to play a role in a heart-healthy lifestyle.

We all know that this includes brushing, flossing and regular dental visits, but how many of you out there use a tongue scraper as well?

Blood Lead Levels and Dental Caries in School-Age Children

This article should come as somewhat of a shocker to those who have always supported water flouridation. Usually, these supporters are somewhat clueless as to the form that this flouride comes in. The hydrofluorosilic acid used is unquestionably regarded as a toxin, and yet communities blindly vote to put it in the water supply. Go figure. Anyway, it is well known that this toxin increases lead uptake in the body, mainly in children. This article supports the concept that the increased lead uptake due to the “flouridated” water leads to weakened teeth and greater cavities. Sound contrary to everything you’ve heard? Welcome to reality–water flouridation is, at best, a waste of money, at worst a toxic exposure to everyone drinking it.
