Dietary fiber fraction of germinated barley foodstuff and the GI tract – (03-08-01)

August 7, 2013 by James Bogash

Dietary fiber fraction of germinated barley foodstuff and the GI tract

This study evaluates a fiber source (GBF) on the health and healing of colonocytes. The results were promising, identifying the fiber component of GBF as the protective factor (not the protein) and also confirming its ability to aid the healing of the cells of the colon. Butyrate is the substance produced when healthy GI flora digest fiber; it has shown the ability to protect colonocytes, help them heal and also help them differentiate properly (possibly avoiding cancerous changes). Remember, to be effective, the fiber AND the healthy flora have to be present…

Butyrate, cytokines and intestinal epithelial cells – (12-17-01)

Butyrate, cytokines and intestinal epithelial cells

Butyrate is one of the short chain fatty acids produced when beneficial bacteria digest soluble fiber in the gut. Much research has supported the beneficial effects of butyrate on colonocytes. These benefits include stabilization of intestinal permeability, increased colonocyte differentiation (= lowered risk of cancer) and now anti inflammatory effects. The combination of probiotics and soluble fiber should be a first line approach for any GI problems.

Importance of Equol—A Clue to Effectiveness of Soy Isoflavones – (12-12-02)

Importance of Equol—A Clue to Effectiveness of Soy Isoflavones

We see a familiar concept here. Soy isolflavones need to be acted on by beneficial bacteria in the gut to produce equol–a nonsteroidal estrogen-like compound that is believed to be one of the most potent antioxidants in this class. This may explain some of the discrepancies in soy benefit studies and is further proof for a holistic approach to health that would include lifestyle changes to support healthy bacterial flora. We see this same concept with soluble fiber and colon cancer–the fiber needs to be acted on by beneficial bacteria to produce butyrate to protect the colonocytes.

STRESS HAS MAJOR NEGATIVE PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS – (02-11-07)

Phenotypic changes in colonocytes following acute stress or activation of mast cells in mice: implications for delayed epithelial barrier dysfunction

While this is a mouse study, the implications confirm what we already know–stress has major negative physiological effects.  This study found that there was an increase in the permeability of the GI tract under stress.  This would create a condition called “leaky gut” where molecules and proteins are getting absorbed into the body that were never supposed to make it in. Since blood flows directly from the GI tract to the liver, this then overburdens the liver and sets up a whole other set of issues.  Bottom line?  Stress kills.  Just in more ways then we used to think…  And it’s not a pretty death.
