Much attention has been focused on the gastrointestinal side effects of NSAIDs, but frequently the damaging effects on the liver, kidneys and joints are never mentioned. An article that appeared in the NEJM several years back gave a LIFETIME accumulation of effects from NSAIDs and acetominophen. 5000 NSAIDs over a lifetime increased risk of renal failure by several fold. How many of us hit this by the time we’re 20?

I would have to say that we have PD pretty close to wrapped up. There has been strong evidence of mitochondrial dysfunction leading to loss of dopaminergic neurons leading to the symptoms of PD. Once that is understood, all the protective factors and the contributing factors really make sense.

This study found a very, very strong difference in the ability to detoxify between PD patients and controls. Along the sulfation pathway, only 30% of PD patients were able to sulfate greater than 5% of a dose of acetominophen–that leaves 95% unsulfated and able to increase oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Controls? 84% were able to detoxify greater than 5%. So, a reduced ability to detoxify leads to increased oxidative stress from damaging toxins; increased oxidative stress leads to greater burden on the mitochondria and greater potential for damage. ANTIPYRETIC THERAPY PRODUCES BETTER OUTCOMES THAN PLACEBO – (03-27-06)

Antipyretic Treatment in Young Children With Fever

I just thought I’d use this study to illustrate a point. This study finds that alternating between acetominophen and ibuprofen has a greater effect at lower a fever then either alone. So what’s the problem? Seems pretty clear cut, right? There has never, to date, that I have ever seen or anyone’s been able to produce for me, that antipyretic therapy is safe or effective or produces a better outcome than placebo. Never. Remember that fever (within reason–we’re not talking about 104 degrees here) is a programmed response by the body so it can more efficiently fight off infections.

At some point you’d think someone might actually think that shutting this normal process down may actually be a bad thing. But apparently no one that funds any studies!! Just another example to cite when “mainstream” medicine throws the “no evidence for alternative medicine” line at you.

TYLENOL LINKED TO CANCER?

The long list of problems associated with pharmaceutical pain control never seems to get any shorter.  NSAIDs have been linked to heart attacks, joint destruction, impotence (yikes!), dementia, liver damage, kidney damage, gut destruction, heart arrhythymias and probably more stuff I’m forgetting right now.  Tylenol has clear associations with asthma in both adults as well as newborns whose mothers took Tylenol during pregnancy.  Kidney and liver damage are on the list as well.

Now we can officially add ad almost doubled risk of some nasty hematological cancers.  The bottom line is that, in general, even “safe” over the counter pain relievers have very serious potential side effects.  Of course, this is where I must interject that chiropractic care has NEVER, to my knowledge, been linked with increased risk of cancer.  We have, however, been accused of causing disc herniations, paralysis and strokes (all of which, by the way, either make no sense biomechanically or have been disproven statistically).

Because of this, I always find it funny how some people shy away from chiropractic care like the mere idea of in office treatment could cause some time of long term detrimental effect, but will pop ibuprofen or Tylenol without a single thought to the very real harms.
