FOOD ADDITIVES AND HYPERACTIVE BEHAVIOUR IN CHILDREN – (04-28-08)

March 4, 2012 by James Bogash

Food additives and hyperactive behaviour in 3-year-old and 8/9-year-old children in the community

While none of this should come as a surprise, it still has not been widely accepted as a factor in addressing hyperactivity disorders. And there is NO downside to feeding your children less processed foods, so the idea of trying every child with some degree of hyperactivity on a less processed diet should be mainstream.

HEALTH FOCUS OF CONTROL IN PATIENTS WITH EPILEPSY – (08-04-08)

February 29, 2012 by James Bogash

Health focus of control in patients with epilepsy and its relationship to anxiety, depression, and seizure control.

This article gets into some touchy, but very important, aspects of health. The bottom line, regardless of all other factors, is that we are in control of our own health. With a very few purely genetic associations, whatever happens to us is a result of the decisions that we make. Period. We and not anyone else, are responsible for our health. Many disease states will never be managed effectively until that patient “buys into” the fact that their health outcomes depend NOT on their doctor giving them the right medication or surgical procedure, but rather on their own choices.

This article found that epileptic patients who had a higher internal focus of control had better seizure control. Keep in mind that much of mainstream medicine does not foster this independent thinking, but rather that your disease is a result of “bad luck” of the gene draw and there really isn’t anything you can do for it but take this pill.

HOW DOES HPA AXIS IN OUR BODY DEAL WITH STRESS? – (03-08-10)

February 25, 2012 by James Bogash

Salivary cortisol, serum lipids, and adiposity in patients with depressive and anxiety disorders

HPA axis refers to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and is how our bodies deal with stress. As a search term, “HPA axis” on PubMed brings about thousands upon thousands upon thousands of articles. This is a heavy focus of much research. But don’t expect your doctor to bring it up because we don’t have a medication to “treat” it. Sometimes it seems that we can’t learn about some aspect of medicine until there is a drug and a drug rep and drug commercials to do the work.

There is not surprise that this study finds alterations in cortisol levels and rhythms in patients with depression or anxiety. Medicating these conditions will not fix the HPA axis problem, and this will leave the patient at risk for things like heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

RISK OF ANXIETY DISORDER AND MAJOR DEPRESSION IN ADULTHOOD – (5-11-09)

February 2, 2012 by James Bogash

Childhood Respiratory Disease and the Risk of Anxiety Disorder and Major Depression in Adulthood

There are a variety of ways to look at this study, but there is no doubt that having almost 20 times the risk of developing anxiety (in infants with respiratory disease at age 1 and parent reported respiratory disease at age 7 that something is happening here. I have several possibilities.

First, it is likely that there would be antibiotics at play here disrupting normal flora. We have seen several studies linking altered GI flora and increased physiological stress. Second, the factors setting up the altered respiratory responsiveness leading to respiratory disease can involve essential immune shifts. This pathological shifting of the immune system can wreak havoc in a variety of ways, including neurological.

Regardless of the linking causes, these findings further underline the importance of avoiding respiratory disease in the first place (healthy pregnancy, strong bacterial flora, unprocessed diet, breastfeeding) as well as an aggressive approach to re-balance the immune system instead of mere medication management.

ARE EVERYDAY SUBSTANCES HARMING OUR CHILDRENS’ BRAINS?

January 30, 2012 by James Bogash

ARE EVERYDAY SUBSTANCES HARMING OUR CHILDRENS’ BRAINS?  By now, this article is probably not new.  It hit the popular press almost 2 wks before it was released online.  This is good, but highly unusual.  Basically, our children are being diagnosed with disorders at unprecedented rates.  Autism, ADHD, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety.  These are all scary diagnoses for an adult.  For a child they should be unheard of.

We really need to look at what we are doing to our children that is DAMAGING their brain.  And what are we NOT doing to protect their brain??  This is not a game.  As a parent, are you giving your 2, 3 or 7 year old soda?  Artificial sweeteners?  Artificial colors?  This is about stepping outside of the box that everyone has been put into with processed foods, fast food meals and constant bombardment of electronic input.

This particular study found almost DOUBLE the risk of an ADHD diagnosis for those kids with the highest levels of organophosphates (pesticide) in their blood.  I know that here in AZ there was much discourse over the potential loss of KidsCare insurance for children due to budget cuts.  There was outrage.

But seriously—just how much care should children need!!???  My little 4 1/2 yr old has been to the doctor’s twice since birth.  He needs NO “medical” intervention.  This is how it should be.  Parents–what are YOU exposing your children to??
