Coffee consumption and the risk of rheumatoid arthritis – (08-17-00)

June 27, 2013 by James Bogash

Coffee consumption and the risk of rheumatoid arthritis

This is a small study suggesting that coffee may be a risk factor for development of RA. Considering that coffee has many other effects that are not so friendly to the body, and that green tea has many documented health benefits, switching from coffee consumption to tea can have a large impact on overall health.

A 10 Year Prospective Followup of Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis – (01-03-02)

A 10 Year Prospective Followup of Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Let’s look at this…very toxic drugs, significant side effects, and NOW we find out that drugs for RA actually make the patient worse in the long run? While it does not surprise me, be really need to wake up in medicine. The “first do no harm” mantra seems to have fallen by the wayside. Treatment for arthritis with NSAIDs has shown progression of osteoarthritis and now this. What makes this article even more dis-concerning is that there are effective, safe natural methods for managing many autoimmune disorders. Lifestyle changes, elimination diets and unrefined diets are some of the most powerful medicines for these conditions. There are still, however, many patients who are not willing to even listen to take of lifestyle changes. I had a patient with scleroderma who took 15 minutes for her and her oxygen tank to make it the 200 yards from the parking lot to my table. Quality of life was zero and progression of the disease was imminent. And yet she thought I was crazy for suggesting that lifestyle changes may have an impact on her condition. No other doctor she had seen had mentioned this before, so it couldn’t possibly be true coming from a chiropractor… Abstract:

Why do Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis use Alternative Treatments? – (05-31-01)

June 20, 2013 by James Bogash

Why do Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis use Alternative Treatments?

I hope there are no patients with RA reading this, because they may get very offended by this study. Basically, this study try to evaluate why patients with RA seek alternative care. The answer? Psychosocial issues. It couldn’t possibly be that conventional therapy for RA is incredibly toxic and may end up making the patient worse, and that alternative practioners can very often significantly relieve or put into remission RA? The concept of lifestyle changes and an anti-inflammatory diet for rheumatologists is, unfortunately, beyond their practice comfort zone.

Topical Solution for Osteoarthritis May Challenge COX-2 Inhibitors – (03-18-01)

June 20, 2013 by James Bogash

Topical Solution for Osteoarthritis May Challenge COX-2 Inhibitors

We are starting to see a large number of “miracle” creams for arthritis hitting the market. Remembering back to the old Ben-gay type preparations, these were purely skin irritants designed to flood the spinal cord with “touch” sensations and prevent pain transmissions for reaching the spinal cord first. New preparations have included many additional topicals ranging from glucosamine/chondroitin to capsaicin. The studies on these types of therapies, to my knowledge, are still scarce. However, the safety of many of these topicals is very good and may warrant a personal clinical trial.

(article) British biotechnology firm Provalis plans to launch its novel topical osteoarthritis solution Pennsaid in the UK this month, saying the product will compete with all nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including COX-2 inhibitors. The UK is the first market for the new product. Provalis has acquired from Canadian firm Dimethaid research the right to sell the compound in the UK and Ireland. Provalis chief executive Dr. Phil Gould told a news conference in London that Pennsaid had been approved for first-line treatment of osteoarthritis by the UK’s Medicines Control Agency and would be approved in the rest of Europe under the mutual recognition procedure. Dimethaid is seeking distributors for the other European countries and has signed a deal with Johnson & Johnson for marketing in the United States. Dimethaid’s technology uses the cell’s tubule system to deliver drugs cell-to-cell. As a result, localised conditions, such as osteoarthritis, can be treated while limiting the body’s absorption of the medication. Dr. Gould said that comparative data showed that pain relief is as least as good with Pennsaid as with the COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib and oral formulations of the NSAIDs diclofenac and naproxen.

Ciprofloxacin For Reactive Arthritis Has No Advantage Over Placebo – (08-25-00)

Ciprofloxacin For Reactive Arthritis Has No Advantage Over Placebo

Although it is well known that certain gastrointestinal infections can cause a reactive arthritis, this study suggests that long term strong antibiotics do not help with symptoms. Unfortunately, these researchers have missed the evidence that suggests that it is not the infectious agent itself that causes the problems, but rather the environment set up by the presence of the infection. Adding strong antibiotics will just kill off more of the normal flora that’s supposed to be there, and evidence suggests that this flora may protect our bodies from the environment.

Ann Rheum Dis 2000;59:565-570 Treatment of reactive arthritis with a 3-month course of ciprofloxacin is no more beneficial than placebo, according to study results published in the July issue of Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. Antibiotic treatment of reactive arthritis is controversial, the investigators note. “Eradication of the causative microbe appears logical,” but previous studies have shown that “short-term antibiotic treatment has no beneficial effect on the outcome of reactive arthritis,” they write.

Benefit of Tripterygium Wilfordii Hook F in rheumatoid arthritis – (08-22-02)

Benefit of Tripterygium Wilfordii Hook F in rheumatoid arthritis

That’s the beauty of natural medicine…just when you think you have at least a partial grasp on many therapeutic against you get hit with a curve. When I first read this I thought it was a new approach to RA, but apparently this agent has had some rather extensive history of use for other autoimmune conditions, including systemic lupus erthythematous.

Severe Hepatic Reactions With New Arthritis Drug – (04-16-01)

Severe Hepatic Reactions With New Arthritis Drug

I know sometimes it may seem that I highlight some of these “drugs are killing us” type of findings, but I only do it to stress how important it is for patients with diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (the disease this drug is used for) to make lifestyle modifications before trying some of the more harmful pharmaceutical options. Oral tolerance, food allergy avoidance, detoxification and GI restoration are all methods used by natural practitioners to manage a case of RA. And with virtually unheard of incidence of side effects, let alone deaths.

(article) Severe liver injuries, some with a fatal outcome, have occurred in patients treated with Aventis’ novel rheumatoid arthritis drug leflunomide (Arava), the European Medicines Evaluation Agency (EMEA) said. In a public statement on its web site, the agency said a total of 296 cases of hepatic reactions had been reported. “Of these, 129 cases were considered as serious, including 2 cases of liver cirrhosis and 15 cases of liver failure, 9 with a fatal outcome.” The statement, dated March 12, said that most adverse events occurred within 6 months of starting therapy. “Although confounding factors were present in many cases, a causal relationship to leflunomide cannot be excluded.” Arava, a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug, is the first new treatment for rheumatoid arthritis in more than 10 years. It has been available from hospital specialists since 1999 for the treatment of adults with active disease.

Arthritis Puzzle: Two Pieces Snap Into Place – (09-26-02)

Arthritis Puzzle: Two Pieces Snap Into Place

This article may be a little technical for some, and the clinical relevance of it is still a long way off, but this article may trigger a fundamental change in the way we view immune responses. I personally have always considered antigens (substances that elicit an immune response by the body) as proteins.

This article challenges that assumption, and suggests that the immune system can also recognize carbohydrates as antigens. As I said…this has no clinical relevance as of yet, but stay tuned.
