Delays in Receipt of Immunizations in Low-Birth-weight Children – (02-22-01)

Delays in Receipt of Immunizations in Low-Birth-weight Children

This article address the “concern” that some infants have a delay in receiving their immunizations. Immunizations are a very complicated, difficult issue. I have always been concerned at giving brand new infants with immature immune systems vaccines. Low birth weight infants have enough to deal with without worrying about taxing their immune systems with vaccinations. I am not 100% against vaccinations, but the sheer volume that newborns and infants receive concerns me. Recent articles have shed some light on the type and levels of mercury found in the thimerosal (used as a preservative). Couple that with the infant’s inability to clear mercury from their systems, and the prescription for harm to the nervous system is possible. Parents need to be FULLY informed and make their own personal decisions; NOT mandated by a government notoriously frought with influence from the pharmaceutical firms.

Impact of the 1999 AAP/USPHS Statement on Thimerosal in Vaccines – (03-08-01)

Impact of the 1999 AAP/USPHS Statement on Thimerosal in Vaccines

This review looks at the effects of the recommendations to delay the first after Hep B vaccine in newborns due to the presence of thimerosal, a mercury containing preservative. This review finds that the rates of vaccination dropped with the recommendation and have not return. A few things to consider. Hep B is a blood borne illness; transmitted via blood contact, unprotected sexual relations and IV drug use. How many infants are unknowingly exposed to these risks factors? Not many, I would guess. Infants borne of Hep B+ mothers know this. I would support vaccination in these infants. But a blanket recommendation to all infants? I have a problem with that. Not all infants are at risk. An additional note on the “safe” thimerosal. The mercury present in these vaccines given to infants can potentiall cause problems. The mercury is directly injected, thereby bypassing the GI’s ability to reduce absorption. The infant has no effective route of elimination of mercury via the bile. And the infant has not yet developed a strong blood-brain barrier to keep mercury away from nervous tissue. Does thimerosal still sound safe? IOM Scrutinizes Link Between Vaccines, Neurological Problems – (07-30-01)

IOM Scrutinizes Link Between Vaccines, Neurological Problems

The arrogance of the powers that be that control the PR on vaccines never ceases to amaze me. Everyone accepts that the ethylmercury present in the preservative thimerosal used in certain vaccines has the potential to accumulate in infants’ tissues at levels far exceeding accepted standards. But, say the powers that be, there is no cause for concern. In the same breath they say that thimerosal as a preservative is being phased out (at great expense, I might add…).

(article) Amidst concern about mercury content in vaccines commonly administered to children and a possible link to autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the Institute of Medicine convened a meeting of their Immunization Safety Review Committee, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Monday. The multidisciplinary committee, chaired by Marie McCormick, MD, ScD, of the Harvard School of Public Health, has been charged with assessing a possible causal relationship between inoculations and adverse health consequences, and disseminating the results of the assessment to the public.Immunizations for Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), hepatitis B, diphtheria, and tetanus toxoids with acellular pertussis (DTaP) have been a source of controversy in recent years because they use thimerosal, a preservative containing low levels of ethylmercury (EtHg), which can cause neurological damage. Pregnant women and fetuses are at highest risk from exposure. The metal is excreted from the body over time. However, according to a review conducted by the Food and Drug Administration in 2000, infants younger than 6 months may accumulate EtHg at levels that exceed federal safety guidelines established for the intake of another highly toxic mercury, methyl mercury, which occurs naturally in seafood.Exposure to large amounts of metallic, inorganic, or organic mercury can permanently damage the brain, kidneys, and a developing fetus. Irritability, shyness, tremors, changes in vision or hearing, and memory problems may result.Although thimerosal has been used in biologics since the 1930s, an increased number of vaccinations combined with a sharp rise in reported autism and ADHD incidence has caused parents and some physicians to question the safety of the inoculations. Preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, suggest a weak correlation between vaccine-related thimerosal exposure and incidence of language and speech delays, along with other neurological problems. In a joint statement made in July 1999 and finalized in June 2000, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the US Public Health Service, and others emphasized that the risks of not vaccinating children far outweigh the possible problem of cumulative exposure to thimerosal. They note, however that “because any potential risk is of concern, and the elimination of exposure to mercury in the form of thimerosal from vaccines is feasible, thimerosal should be removed from vaccines as soon as possible.”Except for DtaP, thimerosal-free versions of pediatric vaccines are available. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine does not contain thimerosal. Parents groups have implicated MMR in the rise in cases of autism, although the CDC and an IOM panel have found no association.

Environmental toxins can have their negative effects by inhibiting the methylation of DNA – (04-08-04)

December 23, 2012 by James Bogash

Activation of methionine synthase by insulin-like growth factor-1 and dopamine: a target for neurodevelopmental toxins and thimerosal

For those of us that are not biochemists and our eyes glazed over at the title to this one–basically, environmental toxins can have their negative effects by inhibiting the methylation of DNA. Remember that methylation reactions are incredibly important and effect such a basic role in human physiology. Thus, problems with methylation can lead to problems in many organ systems.

In this study, the authors found that environmental toxins such as mercury-containing thimerosal inhibit DNA methylation. For the life of me, I cannot see how anyone in the pharmaceutical industry could have even considered the use of mercury as a preservative. I can see it now…”I need something to extend the shelf live of this vaccine so we can make a larger profit on vaccines given to infants. Hey–how about that potent neurotoxin mercury?”

THE USE OF MERCURY IN THIMEROSAL CONTAINING VACCINES IS INEXCUSABLE – (08-25-08)

March 4, 2012 by James Bogash

Mercury Levels in Newborns and Infants after Receipt of Thimerosal Containing Vaccines

The topic of vaccination is always a hotly contested one. Many pediatricians will not keep a patient in the practice if they are not fully vaccinated. As with any other topic, the answer usually lies somewhere in between. Links between autism, allergies, autoimmune conditions and asthma are of concern for patients.

Doctors say the studies do not support the links. But, studies are always done in a vacuum; real life physiology, however, is not. The development of autism and immune system dysfunctions are not caused by single agents, but rather by the entire breadth of compounds a developing infant is and is NOT exposed to.

That being said, the use of mercury in Thimerosal is inexcusable. Period. Whomever thought that there would be any safe level of a potent neurotoxin like mercury injected into a newborn should be shot. Point blank. Then throw in other physiological problems common in infants today like constipation (which allows more time for mercury that the body is trying to eliminate to be re-absorbed), low phytonutrient intake, near universal use of antibiotics with no concern for normal flora, in-utero exposures to toxic chemicals and you’ve got a physiological time bomb waiting to explode.

Add in heavy vaccination (for many self-limiting diseases like chicken pox) which is WELL documented to skew the cytokine balance to a Th2 profile (run THAT one by your local pediatrician) and it’s no wonder autism is on the rise.
