Nontoxic Potentiation of Chemotherapy by Oligofructose or Insulin – (05-31-01)

Nontoxic Potentiation of Chemotherapy by Oligofructose or Insulin

This is really a wonderful article that begins to look at the incredible power of the substances that natural gave us. Remember that oligofructose and insulin are classified as prebiotics (helps friendly bacteria the thrive). This study found that these substances were able to inhibit malignant cancer growth in animals. This article concludes by suggesting that these two compounds should be used as an adjunct to standard chemo. Cancer treatments that bring together the best and nutrition, functional medicine and traditional medical care are almost always going to be your best bet.

Protective role of probiotics and prebiotics in colon cancer – (02-05-01)

Protective role of probiotics and prebiotics in colon cancer

Fiber has been shown to be protective against colon cancer, but a recent study shed some doubt on this belief. However, it is commonly believed that this protective effect comes from the action of probiotics on soluble fiber, producing butyrate. I would love to see the bacterial environment of the GI tracts of the patients used in the study that showed no benefit from fiber, and re-evaluate the data.

Erythromycin as a prokinetic agent in infants and children – (05-17-01)

Erythromycin as a prokinetic agent in infants and children

One of these days I may just throw up my hands in despair and give up preaching against the incoming tide. Until then… What we see here is that the pharmaceuticals may be loosing some of their business in this era of reduced antibiotic use so they are looking for another indication for their drug. Save money on R & D…just take one of the side effects of the drug and try to turn it into an indication! Truly amazing. The idea of using an antibiotic to increase motility of the GI tract goes beyond incredulous. How about using probiotics, high fiber and prebiotics (such as insulin and FOS) instead? Much safer and you are actually looking at fixing whatever is causing the decreased transit.

WHAT ARE THE APPROACHES FOR THE TREATMENT OF ATOPIC DERMATITIS – (04-24-06)

August 11, 2012 by James Bogash

Prebiotics and synbiotics: two promising approaches for the treatment of atopic dermatitis in children above 2 years

This is a great article and illustrates just how interconnected the systems of the human body are. Many other healing arts throughout the world readily accept the fact that many dermatological problems are actually problems with the GI tract. I know many dermatologists would not look to the GI tract for answers to dermatological problems, this article clearly demonstrates the link. And given the safety of this approach, it should be on the front-line of any therapy for atopic dermatitis.

WHAT TYPE OF PROBIOTICS ARE GOOD FOR HEALTH? – (05-01-05)

May 6, 2012 by James Bogash

Dietary Fructooligosaccharides increase Intestinal Permeability in Rats

Okay, so this is a rat study and the amount of FOS given to the rats was excedingly high (4500 GRAMS for an average sized male human–I thought this might be an error, but no corrections have been noted), but this study still illustrates that probiotics and prebiotics given willy-nilly is not always a good thing.

We still have much to learn on this important topic, and much research is focused on identifying what types of probiotics are good for what application (IBS, lower inflammation, immune stimulatory…).  It may be years yet before we fully understand all the nuances of pre/probiotic use.

IS ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE A MAJOR HEALTH PROBLEM? – (10-29-07)

April 17, 2012 by James Bogash

Prebiotics, Probiotics, and Synbiotics Affect Mineral Absorption, Bone Mineral Content, and Bone Structure

I’m really not making this stuff up. And despite thousands of articles relating probiotics to so many aspects of our health, how can we still think the major problem is antibiotic resistance? The number of patients affected by antibiotic resistance is paltry compared to the real number of patients affected by destruction of normal flora.
