Antibiotic Treatment of Adults with Sore Throat by Community PCPs – (09-17-01)

August 17, 2013 by James Bogash

Antibiotic Treatment of Adults with Sore Throat by Community PCPs

Despite evidence to the contrary, antibiotic overuse is still common. The plea by researchers to cut back on antibiotic use have been frequent in mainstream medical journals. So who has been reading these journals?? To be fair, the large chunk of antibiotic overuse responsibility falls upon farmers and their use in lifestock. Overall, I think we would be so much better if we just stepped back and let our bodies fight off an infection by ourselves once in awhile…

Antibiotics by PCPs for Children with Upper Respiratory Tract Infections – (11-14-02)

Antibiotics by PCPs for Children with Upper Respiratory Tract Infections

If this article is not a truly sad reflection on the medical community keeping current with the medical literature I do not know what is. A mainstream medical journal for pediatrics (among many others) have been literally screaming for less antibiotic use for years now. The result? In general, relatively few docs seem to be getting the message. If begging in mainstream pediatric journals does not work, I’m not entirely sure anything will.

PCPS NEED TO TAKE CARE OF DIETARY INTERVENTIONS – (03-06-06)

June 30, 2012 by James Bogash

Nutritional Assessment and Counseling for Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease

This is a pretty strong article pushing for the increased dietary interventions needed to be done by PCPs. A very simple, easy to understand review. Now if only PCPs would actually read it…

TRENDS IN MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE OTITIS MEDIA BY PCPS – (02-11-08)

March 17, 2012 by James Bogash

Trends in management of acute otitis media by PCPs.

In 2004, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians release guidelines on the antibiotic management of acute otitis media (your average ear infection). These are trade organizations that have the best interests of their members in mind. So, you would think that physicians would diligently adopt these recommendations because they would be in the best interests of their patients. So how many did in this study? 15%. Fifteen percent. That’s 85% short of full participation. Quite frankly, this is appalling, sickening and unacceptable.

As physicians, we have an OBLIGATION to do the best for our patients. And that includes staying current to at least a minor degree with medical literature and guidelines. What makes this all so much more bothersome is that ear infections are not that hard to fix, and use of antibiotics will likely increase risk of future infections by destroying normal, protective flora, not to mention the major negative effect years down the line by destroying a major factor in our overall health!! EESHH!! I feel better now.
