Age at acquisition of H pylori infection: study from infancy to adulthood

Geez!! I just LOVE this article!!! This article finds that a large chunk of the population actually acquires this bacteria before the age of ten and thus we should maybe focus therapy at this age group. If this is not the most short-sighted, blinders on conclusion than I’m not sure what is. So most people get the bug before age 10. How many 10 year olds do we have running around with H. pylori caused ulcers? Very, very few.

This article makes it very apparent to me that H. pylori is not the sole cause of many, if not all ulcers. I would even go so far as to suggest that H. pylori could be considered opportunistic if not normal flora and does not cause problems until perturbations in the host’s environment changes. When will we open our eyes and see this?

A Randomized Controlled Trial to Change Antibiotic Prescribing Patterns in a Community

Okay. Pediatric journals print studies that show that educating a provider to lower antibiotic use in ineffective. Does anyone else out there have any idea how to reign in the antibiotic overuse? This is not just a matter of creating antibiotic resistant bacteria. This deals with the larger problem of destroying off normal flora and thereby losing their protective and beneficial effects on our health.

Increased Use of Second-Generation Macrolide Antibiotics for Children

Quite often, I am asked why much of the research does not make it into the hands of clinicians. Sometimes this disparity and transgression is so egregious to be considered malpractice. The issue of using antibiotics when the research is actually AGAINST their use is a perfect example.

The only answer that makes any sense is that many physicians do not read their own journals. There is no other answer that makes sense, but I would welcome any other answer that would not be as scary. That being said, the issue of antibiotic overuse always talks about the bad, bad situation of antibiotic resistance, but never addresses the REAL issue of destroying normal flora and disrupting all the positive health benefits they provide.
