RHABDOMYOLYSIS INCREASED WITH STATINS – (08-28-06)

June 25, 2012 by James Bogash

Clinical Perspectives of Statin-Induced Rhabdomyolysis

This is about as screwed up as it gets… Rhabdomyolysis is a condition were your muscles essentially melt, and the increased burden on the kidneys can be fatal (this is the reason Baycol was pulled off the market) Increased risk of rhabdomyolysis was seen in patients w/ elevated trigylcerides (almost always given for Syndrome X despite this being a VERY poor Rx approach) and perioperatively (the research is constantly pounding to give statins on leaving the hospital). And, if you exercise your risk is higher!!! Given that this class of drugs is being pushed on everyone with a cholesterol level that even gets close to 200, we’re definitely going to see some major ramifications in the next few yrs.

NAC HELPS TO PREDICT THE KIDNEYS IN THE EVENT OF A BAD REACTION – (05-08-05)

April 26, 2012 by James Bogash

N-Acetylcysteine for the Prevention of Contrast-induced Nephropathy

Remember that NAC exerts one of its main actions by increasing the amount of available glutathione, and that glutathione is one of the body’s more potent antioxidant molecules as well as a major participant in detoxification.

This was a review and meta-analysis of several studies, with the consensus being that NAC helps to predict the kidneys in the event of a bad reaction to dyes used in diagnostic imaging.  The problem is that it needs to be administered 12 hours prior to the testing.  It would be nice to see if oral dosages would be as effective as IV.

In the meantime, probably a good idea to pop some NAC if you’re having any imaging done that requires contrast medium.

WHY IS A PLANT BASED DIET HEALTHY FOR ALL OF US? – (01-15-07)

March 25, 2012 by James Bogash

Acid-Base Status Affects Renal Magnesium Losses in Healthy, Elderly Persons

Magnesium is definately on the list of the top few very important nutrients that we are chronically deficient in.  Poor quality diets contribute to this, but more of an animal based diet leads to increased acidity which needs to be bufferred in the kidneys.  The result is a loss of magnesium to protect us from the increased acidity.

Really a catch-22…increased acidity is not tolerated well by our cells and lead to a variety of chronic diseases (cancer comes to mind), but to take care of the acidity we lose magnesium which has it’s own list of chronic diseases that result from deficiency.  The bottom line is that a plant based diet is healthier for us all around.  But, you will lose weight on the Atkins’ diet.
