Fructo oligosaccharides in the prevention of travellers’ diarrhoea – (07-23-01)

Fructo oligosaccharides in the prevention of travellers’ diarrhoea

FOS is a nondigestable carbohydrate that friendly bacteria can use as a fuel source to proliferate and help the GI tract stay healthy. This study shows some benefit to the use of FOS to reduce effects of travellers’ diarrhea. Probiotics and FOS are a nice GI preventative for anyone traveling out of the country. As a side note, there is some concern that certain harmful bacteria (namely Klebsiella) can also use FOS. A stool analysis is always a nice place to start if this is a concern to find out what the flora of the patient’s GI tract consists of.

Probiotics, prevention of antibiotic associated diarrhoea: meta-analysis – (06-10-02)

Probiotics, prevention of antibiotic associated diarrhoea: meta-analysis

Now that the literature is virtually flooded with information on the clinical application and safety record of probiotics, we should begin to see its use in general clinical practice in another 35 years (that accounts for the standard 40 decades for the thumping on the heads of clinicians minus the past 5 years in which probiotics have been showing up in the literature). Remember also that antibiotic resistance is not the only problem with antibiotic overuse–destruction of normal, protective flora has a larger, more insidious impact on public health. Unfortunately this aspect is rarely addressed in the mainstream medical journals.

Zinc started during diarrhoea on morbidity and mortality – (11-14-02)

Zinc started during diarrhoea on morbidity and mortality

This is the latest in a string of research supporting the use of zinc in children with acute diarrhea. Add to this list of therapeutic agents for diarrhea probiotic supplementation and rice. Of interest in this study is that zinc supplementation during onset of diarrhea also reduced risk of acquiring pneumonia within the next 2 to 3 months.

EFFECTS OF ZINC SUPPLEMENTS ON PNEUMONIA AND DIARRHEA – (10-31-05)

August 5, 2012 by James Bogash

Effect of weekly zinc supplements on incidence of pneumonia and diarrhoea in children younger than 2 years in an urban, low-income population in Bangladesh

Whether a study done on poor Bangladesh children will have the same effects as healthy kids in the US is unknown. But the results from something as safe and inexpensive as zinc were pretty impressive. The kids taking zinc once weekly had a much lower rate of pneumonia, and while there were 14 deaths in the placebo group, the zinc group had only 2. Quite a reduction.

DO YOU KNOW THAT USE OF PROBIOTICS PREVENTS DIARRHEA? – (01-26-08)

March 21, 2012 by James Bogash

Use of probiotic Lactobacillus preparation to prevent diarrhea associated with antibiotics

Geez, sometimes I feel like all I do is rant and rave about how disconnected mainstream medicine is from the research, but it’s hard to see it otherwise. We still view antibiotic overuse as an issue because it can lead to antibiotic resistance. But this concern is greatly overshadowed by what happens to use when we destroy the bacteria that is supposed to be there (our normal flora). Along these same lines, using probiotics therapeutically for certain conditions is well supported in the literature.

In this particular study, even using relatively low levels of probiotics (in the 100 million range, where most good quality supplements have 16 BILLION or more..) had a striking effect on the side effects associated with antibiotic use in the hospital and an even greater effect on eliminating C. diff infections with antibiotic use. And compare these outcomes to the safety and cost of using probiotics. It’s a no brainer.
