While this is only a small study, I feel that it is incredibly important. I know that in my office I see many patients on pschoactive drugs. Many of these patients experience weight gain as a side effect, and are frequently bounced around between meds to see which “works best.”

This study uses fish oil as an adjunct to pharmaceutical intervention. How about using fish oil as one tool in the package to include dietary changes and exercise? I think we would find management of depression in this way much more effective with little or no adverse effects.

Treatment of major depressive disorder in children and adolescents

I still am confused about the use of antidepressants in children. I could never conceivably give my child a drug that will alter the way their brain works, a drug that has NOT been tested for long term effects, a drug that seemingly does not impact the course of the condition. I’m not a therapist, but I would guess that teaching these kids life skills and learning how to deal with life’s curves will create a stronger, healthier child. Medicating the issue will only teach that child that drugs are the answer to life’s problems.

Efficacy and Safety of Second-Generation Antidepressants in the Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder

The use of antidepressants in both adults and children has been increasing greatly over the past few years. But are the newer, more expensive (in some cases, VERY expensive) drugs any better than the older ones? And that is, of course, assuming that the older generation antidepressants were all that effective in the first place.

Even more sad is that, in studies done on the efficacy of these newer drugs compared to the earlier models, a whopping 96% of the studies had at least one author with financial ties to the drug companies.
