biotin deficiency

Marginal biotin deficiency during normal pregnancy – (02-04-02)

February 23, 2013 by James Bogash

Marginal biotin deficiency during normal pregnancy

I remember reading in my nutrition text that biotin deficiency was virtually unheard of in actual clinical practice. My how much we’ve learned since cracking that first book… Much of the medical world still barely accepts that vitamin deficiencies are a remote possibility  let alone a major health issue. And yet time and again we see conditional deficiencies in the medical literature. We need to accept that the diets we are receiving are deficient in a variety of nutrients and move towards recommending lifestyle changes to increase micro-nutrient intake.

SMALL DEFICIENCY OF BIOTIN LEADS TO BIRTH DEFECTS – (08-04-03)

October 21, 2012 by James Bogash

Marginal Biotin Deficiency Is Teratogenic in ICR Mice

Although this is a mouse study, the implications can effect the way we view biotin. I remember reading in my nutrition book that biotin deficiency is almost unheard of. Well, as has happened many times in the past, new knowledge leads to new insights.

This article finds that even a small biotin deficiency leads to birth defects. I’m assuming that most of the pharmaceutical prenatals don’t contain biotin (hate to assume but couldn’t find exact formulations on the web..). If they don’t, it furthers drops their status on the list of high quality prenatals. Not that they had that far to drop to begin with…
