Diverticular Disease: Diagnosis and Treatment
Diverticulitis is a condition that I see occasionally in practice. While antibiotics are important in the acute management of the condition, recommendations to avoid flare ups seem a little sparse for most patients. Almost always, patients have been told to avoid foods with small seeds, but patients rarely note that this is an inflaming activity, and no evidence exists to support this restriction. High fiber diets, on the other hand, do have evidence to support their use. While this article does not mention probiotics, the studies showing overall positive benefit of probiotic supplementation on GI complaints are numerous.
