IBUPROFEN’S BAD FOR THE HEART, SO I’LL JUST SWITCH TO TYLENOL, RIGHT? Ironically, I just had a patient come in that had concerns over declining kidney function. The thing that likely contributed to his problem is the use of Tylenol PM to help him sleep. It is commonly accepted that if something is over the counter that it is safe, but this can be far from the truth. In this particular study, it was found that, in those with existing heart disease that use of acetaminophen was associated with higher blood pressure. Given how much the kidneys play a role in blood pressure, this may mean that acetaminophen is negatively affecting the kidneys, or it may have an independent effect on the blood vessels themselves. Either way is not good. So what do we use instead? For this particular patient, he’s going to try meditation before bed. If you’re using Tylenol for pain, I’d suggest finding a good chiropractor.
