Effects of an ad libitum low-glycemic load diet on cardiovascular disease risk factors in obese young adults

Remember that the AHA diet focuses on low fat eating.  All of the research points towards the importance of healthy fats and low glycemic index foods.  This study compared the two approaches.  While weight loss was similar between the two, there was one finding that was shocking.  Plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) leads to clotting.  Higher levels means more tendency to clot and greater risk of heart attacks.  It is strongly associated with insulin resistance.

In this study, the patients on the low glycemic index diet had a 39% decrease in PAI-1.  Pretty darn commendable.  The AHA type diet?  A 33% INCREASE!!!  That just says it all, doesn’t it?
