WHAT DO PARENTS THINK ABOUT INFLUENZA VACCINATION? – (03-06-05)
Parent Opinions about Universal Influenza Vaccination for Infants, Toddlers
It always seems interesting. Across the board, every survey ever looking at vaccination that I have come across shows more educated parents having lower rates of vaccination. Now why do you think that is?
DO YOU KNOW THAT THE BACTERIAL FLORA HAS AN IMPACT ON OUR HEALTH? – (03-06-05)
Bacterial counts of intestinal Lactobacillus species in infants with colic
There is no longer a question that the bacterial flora in our bodies (pharynx, stomach, SI, LI, vaginal vault..) have an impact on our health. While many clinicians that wouldn’t recognize a medical journal if it hit them in the face remains oblivious to this fact, the research, as always, moves on. We are now focusing on the types and levels of bacteria that positively and negatively impact our health. Considering the number of bacteria in our gut, this job is not an easy one.
The research comes in in bits and pieces, but I’m sure that we will soon have a much clearer picture of the impacts different species have on our health. Maybe then our focus will shift away from antibiotic resistance to the much larger problem of destroying normal, protective flora.
IMPACT OF FLU VACCINATION ON SEASONAL MORTALITY – (03-28-05)
Impact of Flu Vaccination on Seasonal Mortality in the US Elderly Population
What does and doesn’t get lots of press never ceases to amaze me. This one did get some mild press for a day or so, but was quickly replaced by the info on vaccine shortages and where to get your vaccinations.
Huh? Okay, let me get this straight–a large review of the data shows vaccinations for the elderly do not save lives, but run out and get yours. Remember last year’s fear? Several elderly persons actually DIED standing in line for an intervention that was not going to have an impact on their own mortality. How ironic.
By the time next year’s “flu season” roles around, you can be the fear mongering and pressure to get vaccinated will be back full strength. How quickly we forget!
EFFECTIVENESS OF INFLUENZA VACCINES IN HEALTHY CHILDREN – (04-04-05)
Assessment of the efficacy and effectiveness of influenza vaccines in healthy children: systematic review
To quote: “no studies assessed reductions in mortality, serious complications.” Well, isn’t that just wonderful considering how much of a push there is to get every child vaccinated with the flu vaccine.
Compare this with a recent review of the flu vaccine in the elderly used over the past 40 years or so with no reduction in mortality in those receiving the vaccine. And remember this next flu season–the push will be on again to get vaccinated and the scare tactics will be employed. We’ll forget these pesky little studies and line up like lemmings…
TO VACCINATE OR NOT TO VACCINATE – (04-04-05)
To vaccinate or not to vaccinate—that is the question: why are some mothers opposed to giving their infants hepatitis B vaccine?
Can someone explain to me why, in study after study after study, the parents who chose not to follow the full vaccination schedule are the most educated and more affluent? Just a rhetorical question, of course…
DIETARY INTAKE IN PATIENTS WITH ASTHMA – (04-25-05)
Dietary intake in patients with asthma: A case control study
It is funny how little we look at dietary factors in the treatment of asthma. I remember a few years back I had a middle aged male patient who I could not even adjust without him going into a one minute coughing spasm that require water to calm down. He had been seeing a pulmonologist for 10+ years. I mentioned to him that refined carbs and caffeine could affect airway reactivity. Turns out he was drinking Mountain Dew several times per day.
Bottom line–one month later, after avoiding Mountain Dew alone, he was back to normal. This was never once mentioned to him by his “specialist.”
COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS OF VARICELLA VACCINATION – (05-16-05)
Cost benefit analysis of universal varicella vaccination in the U.S. taking into account the closely related herpes¨Czoster epidemiology
This cost benefit analysis brings to light an interesting piece of the puzzle. Herpes zoster (aka shingles) is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus in the dorsal root ganglion. It is believed that occasional exposure to the chicken pox virus causes your body to “refresh” its immune defense against this virus even though you don’t actually get sick. So, this process occurring over the years allows the immune system to be on constant defense against chicken pox, which would naturally ALSO suppress shingles. This process does not occur with the vaccination, so those who have received the vaccination will be at increased risk for shingles.
Figuring this into the cost/benefit equation provides the healthcare society with an additional 46 MILLION cases of shingles at a cost of $80 million/year. So, the drug companies make money on the vaccination which then increases likelihood of another disease for which patient need more drugs and more money for the drug companies. If this occurred in any other industry the government and/or courts would shut the racket down so quickly it would make your wallet spin.
HOW TO OVERCOME BARRIERS TO VACCINATION? – (05-16-05)
Negative attitude of highly educated parents and health care workers towards future vaccinations in the Dutch childhood vaccination program
Holy cow. They just don’t get it. This study and every other one I’ve come across show that the more educated someone is, the less likely they are to choose vaccination.
In this study, you can add health care workers to the list of those less likely to choose vaccination. But the asinine quote of the year goes to the author’s conclusion, “Modifiable determinants for a negative attitude to comply with new vaccinations are mainly based on lack of specific knowledge. These barriers to vaccinations might be overcome by improving health education in the vaccination program, especially when targeted at educated parents and health care workers.”
So we need to educate the educated and teach the health care workers about health? Is there no light bulb going off that these people who are less likely to choose vaccination might be onto something?
FACTORS INVLOVED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CERVICAL CANCER – (11-05-07)
Lower Blood Cell Folate Enhances the HPV-16 associated Risk of Intraepithelial Neoplasm
There has been endless press over the past year since the release of the HPV vaccine, which, incidentally is never called that–it is called the “cervical cancer vaccine.” How’s that for a twist from the marketing guys? What seems to have gotten lost in the mix is that it is not exposure to these specific strains of HPV alone that leads to development of cervical cancer. There are many other factors involved, and folic acid status has long been known to be a major player, believed to play a role through aiding healthy cell division.
This study adds further weight to that thought process. Today’s processed diet low in fresh fruits and vegetables and phytonutrients will lead to lower folate status and contribute to cervical cancer risk. Indeed, there have been clinical studies where high dose folic acid alone has reversed abnormal pap results. What is most remarkable, though, is just HOW MUCH of a risk the combination of HPV-16 and low folic acid was. A massive 9 X the risk!!
WHAT ARE THE SAFE MEDICATIONS DURING PREGNANCY? – (11-05-07)
A matched patient-sibling study on the usage of paracetamol and the subsequent development of allergy and asthma
Despite mounting evidence of links between paracetamol (Tylenol) use and asthma in children, it seems that many OBs have not caught on just yet.
The bottom line is that there really are NO completely safe medications during pregnancy. This is such an important time in development of future health risks of the child / adult, and we need to be careful of everything that is put into a pregnant woman’s body. This does work out well for chiropractic, however, as adjusting pregnant women doesn’t seem to cause asthma.
