WORRIED ABOUT PANCREATIC CANCER? YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS

There remains no doubt that pancreatic cancer is one of the more devastating cancers.  Survival times are short and 5 year survival rates are almost unheard of.  Treatment rarely improves outcomes while reducing quality of life.  With all their resources, even Steve Jobs and Patrick Swayze were not able to overcome pancreatic cancer.  For all these reasons and more, prevention remains key.

Many still do not understand that pancreatic cancer is heavily preventable and this is not the first time I have posted on this topic.  There is a very, very strong relationship to the diabetic progression and pancreatic cancer.  That means that merely being on the path to diabetes massively increases your risk for one of the deadliest cancers humans can experience.

I am posting again purely to remind all of the Rantings readers again that living an anti-diabetic lifestyle is NOT just about avoiding diabetes.  A pro-diabetic lifestyle is, ultimately, an early death sentence.  Heart attack, stroke, cancer, kidney failure.  Take your pick.  It likely won’t be diabetes that will kill you, it will be something that diabetes increases your risk for.

Basically, in this particular study, those having been recently diagnosed with diabetes (< 2 years duration) were at an over 500% increased risk of pancreatic cancer.  Whether this indicates that the early stages of pancreatic cancer was actually the cause of the diabetes or whether the progression to diabetes increased the risk of the cancer does not really matter.  Much research supports the later and that lifestyle changes that lower the risk of diabetes also lower the risk of pancreatic cancer.

JUST HOW EFFECTIVE IS PSA SCREENING?

It seems like all cancer screenings are coming under fire recently.  Rational, scientific attemps have been made to knock mammography off its pedastal, but emotions run very high on this topic and few see through this to the real story.  Interestingly, the mammography “debate” is not new and may have been started some 22 years ago in the medical literature, when well known researchers began to question whether we should be putting all of our hopes into mammography.

PSA testing is no different.  Not only are there questions about its effectiveness, but we really need to face the reality that some serious harms can come from overdiagnosis.  Again, this is not new news.  I had reviewed an article over 6 years ago looking at just how ineffective PSA screening was at saving lives.

This particular review article puts a more specific number on the effectiveness of PSA screening.  Overall, researchers found that, to prevent a single death from prostate cancer over the course of 11 years, 1055  men would have to be screened.  That’s basically a thousand-to-one odds.  If this is what we hang our hats on when it comes to cancer “prevention” in this country, we truly are sunk.

In this country, we continue to rely on early detection as a sick sort of prevention, despite the literally thousands of research studies finding lifestyle factors that promote and poor lifestyle factors that prevent many types of cancers.  It’s pretty clear cut.  Lifestyle prevents cancer in the first place so that we do not have to rely on screening to “prevent” cancer.

I have provided a more in-depth review of a variety of ways to lower your risk of prostate cancer in the past and will not go into it again here.  Just take this information and understand that cancer early detection tests (let’s not call them “prevention” tests) are a crap shoot at best, with massive levels of harm being done with false positives and detections of cancers that will likely never progress.  Go into your screening as well educated as you can be.

HOW TO REDUCE CANCER RISKS IN COLON CANCER PATIENTS? – (09-17-07)

Dietary synbiotics reduce cancer risk factors in polypectomized and colon cancer patients

Now that I’m knee deep in a family member being treated for cancer, I can say that one of the more “renowned” cancer groups here in AZ is not anywhere I would again take a family member. There is absolutely no consideration for supporting normal physiology and helping reduce the side effects of treatment and increasing the effectiveness of treatment. It’s really, really difficult to watch from the sidelines.

In this study, we find positive effects with the combination of specific probiotics with short chain fatty acids (produced when bacteria digest soluble fiber in the gut) on colon cancer markers. This raises 2 questions–given that we know that this combination helps prevent colon cancer, why do we not use it for treatment and what does this say about our society’s overuse of antibiotics killing off the normal, protective flora?

INFECTIOUS AGENTS CONTRIBUTE TO CANCER – (08-13-07)

Environmental exposure to bacteria and viruses may provide oncolytic protection against cancers, and declining exposure to infections may contribute to a rising incidence of cancer.

Medical Hypothesis is one of my favorite journals; many of its articles are written by very foresighted people. This author suggests that recurrent exposure to bacteria and viruses over our lifetimes leads to constant surveillance by the immune system for these agents.

Since various infectious agents are well known to contribute to cancer (using the recent hype over the HPV vaccine for cervical cancer as an example), keeping our immune system vigilant in fighting off these agents could ward off cancer as well.

SOY INTAKE REDUCES BREAST, ENDOMETRIAL AND PROSTATE CANCER RISK – (07-30-07)

Epidemiologic evidence suggests that dietary phytoestrogen intake is associated with reduced risk of breast, endometrial, and prostate cancers

It amazes me how many anti-soy sentiments there are out there. Thryoid cancer, breast cancer, growing breasts on little boys, thyroid problems, infertility…the list is quite long. However, I have looked at many of the references the “anti-soy” people use. They just don’t hold up. I remember letter to the editor I wrote in response to an article damning soy. The journal let the author of this article rebut my letter. I checked her references and, out of 7 or so, 5 were in SUPPORT of soy!! She never checked her references!!

The vast majority of research articles on soy and phytoestrogens are positive, this one included. And I find it biased that there is concern over the phytates in soy blocking mineral absorption, but tea containing tannins are ok. Soy containing phytoestrogens are of concern, but eat all the lignans in flax you can grind up. You can’t have it both ways. That being said, I am in support of soy as being a part of a healthy lifestyle, but that does NOT mean processed soy this and processed soy that. Tofu, miso, soy nuts, soy milk, edemame–these are closer to Mother Nature’s intent. Textured vegetable protein and veggie burgers are less in Mother Nature’s plan.

EPIDEMIOLOGY OF SECOND PRIMARY CANCERS – (07-09-07)

The Epidemiology of Second Primary Cancers

The issue here is twofold. First, I believe that our bodies are constantly fighting off cancerous cells. It is not until the immune surveillance is overwhelmed that cancerous tumors sneak past the immune system and begin to grow. This would indicate that the cancer that first shows up may just be one of many “hidden.” Thus, the idea that a second cancer may arise later fits in with this theory.

Another issue is that chemotherapy is very damaging to the body and destroys the immune system. This would leave the body open to future cancers, especially if the needed lifestyle changes are not made. Likely a combination of the two is what occurs, as many oncologists do not even broach the idea of lifestyle changes with their patients. I have had patients see cardiologists that even go so far as to tell their patients to avoid any supplements because they don’t want it the “interfere” with the treatment.

PREVENT ORAL CANCER BY USING ONIONS AND GARLIC – (04-30-07)

Onion and garlic use and human cancer

Before you read this article, we need a quick review on odds ratios. Basically, an odds ratio of 1 means the intervention had no effect, good or ill. Greater than 1 means the intervention increased the risk of something. Less than one means it protected. So an odds ratio of 0.5 means the risk was cut in half. With this knowledge, look at the odds ratio for increased onion and garlic use. Staggering is the only word for it. Massive reductions in oral cancer risk–almost eliminating it.

So, think we’ll be seeing this info on all American Cancer Society materials? How bout a “race for the garlic and onion…” Hearing testimonials from a middle aged man on how he never got oral cancer because he loves garlic just isn’t as heartbreaking, huh?

RISK OF COLORECTAL CANCER AND COLON CANCER – (03-05-07)

Risk of Colorectal Cancer is linked to Erythrocyte Compositions of Fatty Acids as Biomarkers for Dietary Intakes of Fish, Fat, and Fatty Acids

Another wow. Look at these odds ratios…as high as an 9.45 times increase in risk of colon cancer with higher levels of saturated fat / lower levels of healthier fats in red blood cells. This is one of those reasons I have such a beef with our national organizations.

Information like this needs to be disseminated to everyone within earshot. Just by increasing our intake of healthier fats and reducing intake of unhealthy fats we could make a serious dent in the rates of one of the greater cancer killers. But our national organizations remain silent, instead pushing to collect ever more money to find a “cure” for a very preventable disease.

BE CAREFUL TO USE YOUR SUNSCREEN NEXT TIME YOU STEP OUT- (03-05-07)

Sunscreen enhancement of UV-induced reactive oxygen species in the skin

Doesn’t this just run contrary to public health recommendations? Basically, the addition of sunscreen, after one hour, ends up creating MORE damage to the skin than not using sunscreen. This is compounded by the fact that sunscreen blocks Vit D production by up to 98%. So, not only does our public health measures promote the use of SPF 900 when walking from the house to the care to block all potential sunlight formation of Vit D, but using that sunscreen will ultimately result is greater damage and risk of cancer to the skin. Quite a kick in the gluts, huh?

HIGHER ESTROGEN LEVELS EQUATE TO A RISK OF BREAST AND ENDOMETRIAL CANCERS – (01-15-07)

Fatness at birth predicts adult susceptibility to ovarian suppression: An empirical test of the Predictive Adaptive Response hypothesis

I can honestly say that I do not routinely ask patients about their birth status (premature, weight, weight gain in the first 6 months…) but given the increasing evidence for gestational events to preprogram the fetus, this is not an unrealistic route to take.

In this study, the authors found that, when pregnant women were well fed, their adult daughters had higher estrogen levels and these levels were harder to reduce with exercise.  That would equate to a greater risk of breast and endometrial cancers.  Wow!!  Talk about needing to stratify responders in an “exercise to reduce breast cancer” epidemiological study!!
